The "confession"

Hamlet overhears what he believes is Claudius confessing to the murder of his brother. He is about to execute him, but pulls himself back form the act believing that it would lead to Claudius being sent to heaven rather than hell where he belongs.

Hamlet is summoned to his mother's chamber

Gertrude has summoned Hamlet to her chamber. Polonius is hiding behinf a tapestry to overhear the conversation.

Gertrude reprimands Hamlet for offending Claudius during the play.

Hamlet replies that it is more offensive to kill a king and marry his brother.

At this point Hamlet will reveal everything he knows.

The death of Polonius

In the excitement Polonius cries out in response to a cry from the Queen and Hamlet believing it is Claudius stabs Polonius through the tapestry.

Afterwards we see the reaction of Gertrude to this act and Hamlet's pours his heart out to his mother about the loss of his father and her marriage to Claudius.

Gertrude says that she has been deeply moved by his speech and it is at this moment we realise that their relationship is incestuous.

Gertrude is now convinced Hamlet is mad

The ghost appears. Hamlet can see it but Gertrude cannot. She is now convinced Hamlet is mad.
